Fiberglass Rebar on stainless
steel chair
-
To combat corrosion, we used fiberglass or
stainless rebar in about half our installations.
-
Fiberglass rebar [GFRP] is more economical
than stainless steel
-
However, fiberglass bar does not have an ASTM
standard.
-
We could sell our QC methods and those of
the manufacturer. The manufacturer would further certify the tensile
strength through destructive testing. But the test is not ASTM.
That was a problem for some specifiers.
-
The other half of our installations used epoxy
coated or galvanized bar.
-
Galvanized bar is subject to rapid depletion
at elevated temperatures and high PH. Not a good choice.
-
Epoxy coated bar is subject to pocket corrosion
at any nick. Nicks are hard to avoid.
-
In all cases we used an impermeable mix design.
