Interim management
Some things to think about
Once I
was a regional manager located in Atlanta. I had to shut down a branch
in Miami.
Some things didn't
go very well.

Personnel relocation The
general manager was slated to move to the sales manager role at another
facility. That was delayed while he managed the shutdown. In
retrospect, there was a big opportunity cost because the sales manager
role really needed to be filled.

Shutdown obligations
There were customer obligations to meet. We kept a skeleton crew.
But, really they were focused on personal matters. The customer obligations
were not met in a completely satisfactory way, and we suffered some inventory
write-downs that could have been avoided.
Once I shut
down and moved a precast plant and started up at a new plant.
Some things didn't
go very well.

Distractions Operating
managers were distracted from their normal duties by the myriad of problems
related to moving and startup. Operating costs were unexpectedly
high.

Customer service We
were late finishing a job. There were extra costs and embarrassment.
